IT'S unashamedly ugly and costs more than a BMW 3-series sedan - but women are still queueing up to buy it.
Marking the moment when handbags topple shoes as the most important fashion accessory, the world's most expensive handbag - made from bits of 15 other bags - was unveiled in Europe this week, with a price tag of R350000.
The Christian Louboutin Tribute Patchwork - which includes panels of rare feathers, coins, denim and fur - was hailed this week as the sign that handbags had supplanted shoes to become the ultimate fashion accessory. The asymmetrical, quilt-like bag hit catalogues as UK retailer Selfridges reported that the average cost of designer bags had jumped 55% in two years - to an average of R12000.
In another report, global retail market research company NDP Group said the proportion of women in the Western world who bought at least one new bag each year had ballooned from 26% in 2000 to 44% in 2005.
Marshal Cohen, chief instries analyst for NDP, stated that new handbags were now to women what new cars were to men.
And this applies to South Africa as well.
Totes by Chloé, Gucci and Christian Louboutin have been newly introced to the country on a wave of customer demand so great that it has revived the entire fashion instry.
Experts told the Sunday Times that handbags were in the ascendancy because women had collectively grown tired of their designer shoes being ruined by wear, and of going out of fashion within a year. Bags "have longevity in both senses" and "don't have to match clothes at all".
South African fashion designer Gavin Rajah, in Paris this week to promote his own new range of bags, said: "Oh, South African women are right up with this wave - they have a big bag fetish. Having had two or three bags 10 years ago, the ordinary fashion-conscious woman will now have four or five,louboutin boots, at least. I'm in Paris right now with a very prominent South African businesswoman, and she's carrying a bag by Ralph Lauren which I know costs over R50000."
Confirming Rajah's pronouncement, Top Billing presenter and former Miss South Africa Basetsana Kumalo admitted that she had ",christian boots;more than 150 bags", including bags by Fendi and Christian Louboutin - and often bought them so fast that they piled up in her boot, before she had a chance to transfer them to her house.
Kumalo has yet to see the Tribute, but cooed: "That sounds quite an over-the-top price, but we love Louis (Vuitton) - I'm such a fan. And I love big bags - the kind you can throw your life into.
"I've just bought a beautiful olive ostrich bag, which really did cost an arm and a leg, though I won't say exactly how much."
Vanashree Singh, wife of filmmaker Anant Singh, who has a giant collection of designer handbags herself, said she believed handbags had taken off because "what women are realising is that with a great handbag, you don't have to match your clothes - it makes a statement on its own".
"You can wear a T-shirt from Gap and a pair of jeans, and you know you'll look like you've made it if you just have a smart handbag to go with. Women are thinking about their accessories as investments, not just short-term statements."
The Tribute patchwork has supplanted the Hermes Birkin (around R260000), the Fendi B-Bag (around R230000, in black crocodile skin), and the Muse by Yves St Laurent - a favourite piece of apparel for supermodel Kate Moss.
While it reportedly has already chalked up a waiting list, the bag was panned on blog sites this week.

普魯斯,1847年8月20日生於小貴族家庭,童年時父母雙亡。16歲參加一月起義,在戰斗中負傷,被捕入獄。1866年中學畢業,進入華沙中央學校數理系學習,兩年後因無力交納學費而輟學。他曾當過工人、攝影師和統計局的職員等。

70年代初,普魯斯開始擔任華沙《星期評論》、《家庭監護人》、《瓦河》、《華沙信使》、《新聞》等報刊的編輯和記者。從1875年開始,他連續12年在《華沙信使》報上以「每周記事」的形式發表小品和政論,還創作了許多中、短篇小說。他早期發表的短篇小說《孤兒的命運》(1876)、《米哈爾科》(1880)、《安泰克》(1881)、《改邪歸正的人》(1881)、《一件背心》(1882)和中篇小說《阿涅爾卡》(1880)等,描寫了下層人民的悲慘遭遇,頌揚了他們高尚的道德品質,並揭露貴族資產階級的自私、虛偽、貪婪。中篇小說《回浪》(1880)描寫工廠主對工人的壓迫和被壓迫者的反抗。

1882~1884年,普魯斯參加了華沙慈善事業協會,從事照料和教育孤兒的工作。此後的10年中,他主要進行文學創作,發表了《前哨》(1885)、《玩偶》(1887~1889)、《解放了的女性》(1890~1893)和《法老》(1895)等長篇小說。

《前哨》的主人公斯利馬克是一個富裕農民,他的利益受到德國移民的打擊和侵犯,作者寫他同德國人的斗爭,同時也寫了他的自私自利和對長工的殘酷無情。

《玩偶》(中譯本作《傀儡》)是普魯斯的代表作,主人公伏庫爾斯基體現了波蘭資產階級的某些特點,他由參加革命到背叛革命,由追求名利、地位、女人到成為買辦,具有一定的典型意義。小說一方面反映了普魯斯對現實的不滿和對波蘭民族解放運動的懷念;另一方面,它的主人公被寫成是為社會謀福利的人,是窮人的救世主,表明作者存在希望資產階級中的代表人物出來改造社會的幻想。揭示了當時資本主義與沙俄的勾結以及與封建貴族實行妥協的現實。

在《解放了的女性》中,普魯斯通過描寫一個熱心農村公益事業的女性的悲慘遭遇,揭露資產階級的爾虞我詐、損人利己以及小市民的自私狹隘,同時諷刺了波蘭社會某些階層對婦女解放運動的庸俗化的見解。

《法老》以古埃及社會為背景,作品描寫埃及面臨的復雜的民族矛盾和階級矛盾,奴隸、農民遭受的剝削壓迫,歌頌了他們的反抗斗爭,抨擊了祭司貴族集團的腐敗。

1905年俄國革命失敗對普魯斯震動很大,他一方面不滿資本主義制度和沙皇的統治,但找不到改變現狀的出路而一度陷入悲觀。在取材於1905年革命的長篇小說《孩子們》(1908)中,他對革命作了歪曲的描寫;可是他在最後一部未完成的作品《轉變》中,卻又對一個為勞動人民解放事業而斗爭的革命者進行了歌頌,表明作家最後對於革命有了認識。他於1912年5月19日在華沙逝世。

普魯斯的作品對波蘭19世紀現實主義文學的發展作出了突出的貢獻,他善於運用諷刺、幽默、虛構、誇張和朴質的敘述等多種手法描寫細節往往能在矛盾中展示人物性格特徵,加以藝術性的概括。作品有濃厚的鄉土氣息。
