在美國，最具影響力的大學排行榜是《美國新聞和世界報道》的最佳大學排名。該排名始於1983年，廣受關注。
排名數據來自以下幾個途徑：向學校發送調查問卷、參考所評選大學的網站、在其他學術界人士間進行民意調查等。
該雜志評選的主要標准包括：在評選某所大學時，請其他大學的校長、教務長和系主任打分；連續6年的畢業率和大學新生的保留率；學生入學平均成績；教師工資、教師水平、學生與教師比例、全職教師比例等；校友打分等等。其中，大學在同行中的聲望分佔比最大，為25%。其次是畢業率和學生保留率，佔20%，師資力量也佔20%。

Further downthe rankings, one of the biggest moves was made by Rensselaer PolytechnicInstitute, which leapt nine spots from a tie at 50th to a tie at 41st。
