工程學和計算機科學方面的前十所大學中，分別有3所和4所大學來自中國大陸，清華大學在這兩個學科方面均排名第一。中國大陸大學在以下學科領域表現最搶眼：

根據八日公布的最新《〈泰晤士報〉高等教育——二零零八全球頂尖大學排行榜》，美國長春藤名校哈佛大學蟬聯全球最佳大學，耶魯大學排名第二，前五十名頂尖大學以美國大學居多，亞洲地區包括日本、香港、新加坡、中國及韓國都有大學上榜。

這項調查是第五年進行，由QuacquarelliSymonds(QS)公司進行資料收集調查，根據各大學的研究、教職員人數、國際知名度、教學質量等進行評等與分析。
據「中央社」報道，該調查對全球前二十名最佳大學的排名分別是：哈佛大學、耶魯大學、劍橋大學、牛津大學、加州理工學院、倫敦帝國學院、倫敦大學、芝加哥大學、麻省理工學院、哥倫比亞大學、賓州大學、普林斯頓大學、杜克大學與約翰霍普金斯大學並列第十三，康乃爾大學、澳洲國立大學、史丹佛大學、密西根大學、東京大學、馬吉爾大學。
去年與耶魯大學並居第二的劍橋大學與牛津大學，今年分別跌到第三和第四；普林斯頓大學由去年的第六名跌到今年的第十二名；康乃爾大學由去年的第二十名升到今年的第十五名；瑞士聯邦理工學院蘇黎世分校由去年的第四十二名，躍升到今年的第二十四名，進步驚人。
上榜的亞洲大學中，以日本的東京大學排名第十九，成績最佳，京都大學排名第二十五，香港大學由去年的第十八名，跌到第二十六名，新加坡國立大學由去年的第三十三，進步到今年的第三十；首次進前五十大排行榜的香港科技大學從去年的第五十三大幅進步到第三十九。
中國北京大學由去年的第三十六名，大幅滑落到第五十名，與國立首爾大學同列第五十名。
在前五十大世界最佳大學中，共有十三個國家的大學登上排行榜，數目高於去年的十二個國家，新入榜的大學包括：香港科技大學、哥本哈根大學、都柏林三一學院、瑞士洛桑聯邦理工學院、國立首爾大學。

最出名的大學排名第一是《TIMES》泰晤士報的，第二是英國衛報《GUARDIAN》的大學排名，這兩個排名歷史都很悠久，而且認可度也很廣，和他們兩個比起來，QS的英國大學排名只排在第三，歷史沒有他倆悠久。

泰晤士高等教育世界大學排名（Times Higher Ecation World University Rankings），又譯為THE世界大學排名，是由英國《泰晤士高等教育》（Times Higher Ecation，簡稱THE）發布的世界大學排名。

該排名每年更新一次，以教學、研究、論文引用、國際化、產業收入等5個范疇共計13個指標，為全世界最好的1000餘所大學（涉及近90個國家和地區）排列名次[1-2]。為保證排名的公正和透明，由普華永道（PwC）進行獨立審計。

麻省理工學院創立於1861年，早期側重應用科學及工程學，在第二次世界大戰後，麻省理工學院靠美國國防科技的研發需要而迅速崛起。在二戰和冷戰期間，麻省理工學院的研究人員對計算機、雷達以及慣性導航系統等科技發展作出了重要貢獻。
