司機解釋說他是巴基斯坦人，開車時喜歡聽收音機，經常把不熟悉的、精彩的詞隨手記下來，然後向乘客詢問他們的意思和拼法。
「Peculiar，這個詞什麼意思？」他問。
這個我知道。「指奇特、古怪，經常帶點兒懷疑的意味，」我說。
「謝謝您，小姐。那麼，idiomatic呢？」
我清清嗓子，說：「嗯，它是指，嗯，它是語言的一種獨特運用。」
我自以為「獨特」一詞用得很妙，他卻一臉的迷惑。這是在提示我，如果對方沒有明白，這詞兒就不能算用得妙。
「啊，這么說吧，idiomatic和idiom有關，而idiom是指一個國家的某一特定地區或一個民族的某一特定人群使用的詞，該地區以外的人，不屬於這個群體的人一般不用或不明白它的用法。」
看著他迷惑不解的樣子，我不知用什麼恰當的詞才好，只好繼續解釋下去，似乎一千個模糊的詞加起來可以等於一個准確的定義。
「你能舉個例子嗎？」
我絞盡腦汁地想：「圍觀塞車，」這是個獨特的芝加哥慣用語。

「算了，別管它，諺語是給人們以警示的短小精悍的句子。」

當我在腦海里拚命地搜索時，記價器上的數字又跳了20美分。最後我低聲說：「欲速則不達？」
但它算是諺語嗎？且慢，諺語是否應該是些小故事而並非短語呢？我還在掂量諺語可能就是小故事時，他又問：「那慣用語是諺語嗎？」
這我可以回答，但不是在此時。因為此時這一回答至關重要，一個好奇聰明的外國移民以為他所期待的答案會從一個本國人的口中自然而然地脫口而出，就好像十月的樹葉會自然地落下來一樣。因此我退卻了。

直到那時，我一直在為這位司機學習英語的執著而感動，陶醉於能有機會與一個充滿好奇心的人一起來滿足自己對語言詞語的好奇心，卻未能充分意識到在這輛計程車上可能犯下的語言欺詐錯誤。我幾乎不敢想像這位司機聽到的是什麼樣的蹩腳英語，因為像我這樣的懦夫不敢坦白地承認：「我對自己的母語並不懂。」
我只能希望像他這樣好奇的人會有一本字典，希望他能明白，不論乘客如何解釋，發生圍觀塞車時，欲速則未必不達。
Unit6 開羅的女計程車司機
她叫娜格特。
我第一次見到她是在開羅機場。一個女計程車司機——在一大群男夥伴中唯一干這一行的女性。
你知道在深夜到達一個陌生的城市是一種什麼感受嗎？沒有任何人，甚至沒有一縷陽光來迎接你。當我步出機場時，迎面而來的是成群的計程車司機——在全世界所有的機場都有眾多計程車司機四處轉悠。在開羅，出租司機人更多，更喧鬧。「計程車！」「你要計程車嗎？」我耳邊充斥著這些聲音。
我感到一隻有力的手抓住了我的左臂。「你需要計程車，跟我來！」那個女人說。她什麼都沒有問，只是拉著我穿過人群。我順從地跟著她。一個旅遊者，特別是一個婦女，有些時候就不得不信賴某個人。我們來到一輛破舊的小車前。這輛車的風光已過——如今車身上有不少擦傷，輪胎磨得光禿禿的，擋風玻璃上還有一道裂縫。但它的確是一輛計程車。而且這個女人將親自開車送我。她把我的包搬進行李箱，上好鎖，然後坐在駕駛座上。這時我才鬆了一口氣。「我會開車送你。別擔心，」她說。

我是在賓夕法尼亞的一個鄉間小鎮長大的。在那個地方，你叫什麼名字，你是干什麼的，你吃的是什麼，以及諸如此類的事兒別人都了如指掌。那時，我是一個門門皆優的好學生，是大家公認的一個乖孩子，人人都喜歡我。毒品與我的生活中根本不沾邊，從來也沒去想過--我別的事情還忙不過來咧。
我一直夢想到紐約市去學表演，然後從事舞台表演生涯。後來，我媽帶我到那座城市去上表演藝術學校，實現了我的夢想。你能想像得到，這與家裡相比可是大不一樣。
我接觸到了許多新朋友，新觀念，接觸到了一種全新的生活方式--這種生活方式也使我開始接觸到了毒品。我在藝術學校遇到的那些人多數都已經有多年的吸毒經歷。當時我覺得通過吸毒我可以真正融入他們那個世界，可以加深我與他們的友情。我試過大麻，甚至還試過一點可卡因，不過，永遠改變了我的生活的是搖頭丸。
