Unit5無言以對
幾周前我乘坐計程車，司機通過後視鏡看著我說：「對不起，小姐，能幫個忙嗎？」
精明老練的城裡人都知道，對諸如「能幫個忙嗎？」這樣的問題，回答永遠應該是「那要看是什麼忙了。」而我卻高聲地說：「當然可以。」
「謝謝！」他說，並向後排座遞過來一張黃紙條。
我盯著紙條，疑心頓起腔局：難道他在開玩笑？抑或是威脅？紙條上是手寫的工工整整幾個小字：proverb，peculiar，idiomatic。
「請問，這幾個字是什麼意思？」
我沮喪地看著紙條上的字，就好像在晚會上你盯著幾個以前曾經見過的面孔，卻怎麼也想不起他們的名字。Proverb？Peculiar？Idiomatic？我怎麼會知道？會用一個詞是一回事兒，會解釋可是另外一回事兒。於是我故意轉移話題。
「這些字是哪兒來的？」
司機解釋說他是巴基斯坦人，開車時喜歡聽收音機，經常把不熟悉的、精彩的詞隨手記下來，然後向乘客詢問他們的意思和拼法。
「Peculiar，這個詞什麼意思？」他問。
這個我知道。「指奇特、古怪，經常帶點兒懷疑的意味，」我說。
「謝謝您，小姐。那麼，idiomatic呢？」
我清清嗓子，說：「嗯，它是指，嗯，它是語言的一種獨特運用。」
我自以為「獨特」一詞用得很妙，他卻一臉的迷惑。這是在提示我，如果對方沒有明白，這詞兒就不能算用得妙。
「啊，這么說吧，idiomatic和idiom有關，而idiom是指一個國家的某一特定地區或一個民族的某一特定人群使用的詞，該地區以外的人，不屬於這個群體的人一般不用或不明白它的用法。」
看著他迷惑不解的樣子，我不知用什麼恰當的詞才好，只好繼續解釋下去，似乎一千個模糊的詞加起來可以等於一個准確的定義。
「你能舉個例子嗎？」
我絞盡腦汁地想：「圍觀塞車，」這是個獨特的芝加哥慣用語。
可這算得上名副其實的慣用語嗎？我不得而知。我越想慣用語，就越沒有把握說清楚慣用語到底是什麼？
「那麼proverb呢？」
我本該當時就告訴這個可憐的人，我的解釋也許會誤導他對諺語真正含義的理解，但我卻說：「我覺得諺語就是一種警語，但又不完全是。」
「一種什麼？」
「算了，別管它，諺語是給人們以警示的短小精悍的句子。」
「比如說……」
當我在腦海里拚命地搜索時，記價器上的數字又跳了20美分。最後我低聲說：「欲速則不達？」
但它算是諺語嗎？且慢，諺語是否應該是些小故事而並非短語呢？我還在掂量諺語可能就是小故事時，他又問：「那慣用語是諺語嗎？」
這我可以回答，但不是在此時。因為此時或陪這一回答至關重要，一個好奇聰明的外國移民以為他所期待的答案會從一個本國人的口中自然而然地脫口而出，就好像十月的樹葉會自然地落下來一樣。因此我退卻了。
「你請乘客給你解釋詞意的時候，他們大多都會給你答案嗎？」
「會的，小姐，很有意思的解釋。」
直到那時，我一直在為這位司機學習英語的執著而感動，陶醉於能有機會與一個充滿好奇心的人一起來滿足自己對語言詞語的好奇心，卻未能充分意識到在這輛計程車上可能犯下的語言欺詐錯誤。我幾乎不敢想像這位司機聽到的是什麼樣的蹩腳英語，因為像我這樣的懦夫不敢坦白地承認：「我對自己的母語並不懂。」
我只能希望像他這樣好奇的人會有一本字典，希望他能明白，不論乘客如何解釋，發生圍觀塞車時，欲速則未必不達。
重返大學
如果我認為我能活到百歲，那麼明年秋天我就要重返大學。我在大三快結束時應征入伍。四年服役期滿後，不想返校完成學業。當時我覺得我好像什麼都懂了。
可是，事實是，我並不是什麼都懂。我現在打算花點兒時間學習，但我不願從休學的地方接著修讀。我想重新從大一開始讀。要知道，吸引我的不僅僅是大衫圓蠢學教育本身。由於近兩年來我參觀過十幾所大學，我感到大學生活異常愉快。
大學校園里的年輕人都巴不得盡快走出校園去體驗生活。他們似乎並不明白他們現在享有的是生活中最美好的時期。在這里，他們除了對自己，無需對他人負責；在這里，他們有現成的朋友；老師會盡力幫助他們；家人會盼他們回家過聖誕節，講述他們的得意經歷；還有一日三餐，雖非美食，可你不能奢望太多。
太多的學生厭煩了受教育的過程，他們認為一半的老師是傻瓜，這我不否認；他們認為體制有時糟糕透頂，這我也不否認；他們認為周圍沒有可愛的女孩兒和男孩兒，這我可不同意。他們只是身在其中，沒有意識到大學時光是多麼美好。
學生們只是熱心於掌握他們認為能使他們賺錢的知識，對教育本身實際不感興趣。在這一點上他們大錯特錯了，而這一點正是我為什麼要重返大學的原因。我現在知道知識的樂趣，一種與它的實用性無關的單純的快樂。
我要修幾門哲學課程，我喜歡哲學的思維過程。哲學家們有時過於較真了，但我依然喜歡他們，甚至包括那些我認為持錯誤觀點的哲學家。我對偉大哲學家的了解大多來自於二手資料或簡寫本。現在我想修一門必須研讀柏拉圖、亞里斯多德、休謨、斯賓諾莎、洛克、約翰·杜威和其他偉大思想家的課程。
我還想學點微積分，在這方面我既無能力又缺乏興趣，但是在數學領域發生的一些事情我搞不明白，所以我很想探個究竟。我不必擔心成績單，因為不會寄給我的父母。我敢肯定我會比當年把成績單寄給父母時還要學得好些。
還有一些文學名著我應該讀，但如果沒有來自良師的壓力，我也許永遠不會讀，因此我要修幾門英語文學課程。我曾經學過一門專門研究喬治·戈登·拜倫（現在通常稱為拜倫爵士）的課程，我現在還想再重修一遍。我第一次學得不錯。我甚至認認真真地讀完了《唐璜》，而且一直驚異它的偉大。如果我重修一定會得到"優"。我想選幾門輕松的課程。

如果能找到一位好老師，我一定要重新學習一遍英語語法和用法。他得是位優秀老師，因為我對語言的應用還頗有些研究，有時可能會認為他教得不好。我有時也會疑惑。有一天我就想過"please"一詞在"Please don't take me seriously"一句中是什麼詞性。
