Here the competition is potential, all-round. College students in addition to learn professional courses outside, still should focus on their own comprehensive ability and consciousness training. These capabilities including: communication ability, social activity ability, expressing ability, interpersonal skills and legitimate access monetary compensation of consciousness. As college students, the vision to open, knowledge will try to expand some, attention should be paid to all-round development. Liberal arts to understand more scientific and technical knowledge, learning science also want to understand a little arts knowledge, no matter what major to learn all want to have some art tastes and accomplishment.
树立科学目标
在中学阶段，所有的同学几乎都有一个共同的目标，那就是考上大学，所以再紧、再累他们都能坚持。但是进入大学之后，许多同学便进入了目标盲区，有了一种失落感、松懈感，再也难以保持中学时的求知热情。如何尽快度过盲区，重新确立新的学习目标，直接关系到能否顺利度过大学生活，圆满完成学习任务。
有些大一新生雄心勃勃，给自己定位也是又高又远，想法很多，如考研、拿双学位、英语过六级、考计算机等级证、考会计证等等都想要。但人的精力毕竟是有限的，目标太多，脚踏几只船，容易使自己顾此失彼。每个同学都要清楚地认识到，确保自己本专业学习任务能够圆满完成是一切目标的根本与前提。有的同学学习本专业的课程本来就比较吃力，却还要报一大堆资格考试，结果落得“鸡飞蛋打”的结局。因而，新同学进校后，应根据自己的目标和具体情况，合理进行定位，确定好远期目标和近期目标，主攻目标和附带目标，不能好高骛远。也有的同学感觉“上大学已经实现了终极目标”，整天无所事事、虚度光阴，其实大学只是一个学习阶段的开始，如果不珍惜这一宝贵的学习机会，将来势必两手空空。
从专业中找兴趣
有些学生抱怨自己的专业与兴趣不对口，并以此为借口在大学混日子。一个人没有意志、信念和精神，即使有兴趣，事业也难以有成。为了自己将来的生存和发展，大学新生们要切记：当你不能从兴趣中寻找专业时，那就学习从专业中寻找兴趣。大学新生学习动力不足的深层原因是缺乏远大的理想，没有树立正确的人生观。
毕业生的例子同样证明：大学里的专业学习并不能作为此后包打天下的惟一法宝，各种实际技能和综合素质才是自己终身受益的宝贵财富。实际上，现代大学教育尤其注重学生的实际技能和综合素质的培养，而这又并非某个专业所独有的，况且，许多能力和素质的培养也不仅仅来源于某个专业。
适应大学学习氛围
进入大学后，中学那种以教师为主导的教学模式变成了以学生自学为主的自主模式。大学老师主要传授学习方法，引导学生进行分析、归纳、推导，知识的获取更多要靠自己去做。要学会培养自己获取知识和信息的能力，即所谓的“学会学习”。在大学里，学习的概念不仅仅指课堂上的内容，还包括其他方面。如泡图书馆、做实验、参加丰富多彩的课外活动及各种竞赛、参与各种集体和社团活动、聆听各类讲座、搞社会调查等，更可以和同学、师长广泛交流，相互切磋。
全方面发展自己
在大学里，考试分数不再是衡量学生的绝对因素，人们更看重的是综合能力的培养和全面素质的提高。在这里竞争是潜在的，全方位的。大学生除了要学好专业课程外，还应该注重对自身综合能力和意识的培养。这些能力包括：沟通能力、社会活动能力、表达能力、人际交往能力以及正当获取金钱报酬的意识。作为大学生，视野要开阔，知识面也要尽量扩大一些，要注意全面发展。学文科的要懂一点科学技术知识，学理科的也要懂一点文科的知识，不管学什么专业都要有一些艺术方面的爱好和修养。
