根据八日公布的最新《〈泰晤士报〉高等教育——二零零八全球顶尖大学排行榜》，美国长春藤名校哈佛大学蝉联全球最佳大学，耶鲁大学排名第二，前五十名顶尖大学以美国大学居多，亚洲地区包括日本、香港、新加坡、中国及韩国都有大学上榜。

这项调查是第五年进行，由QuacquarelliSymonds(QS)公司进行资料收集调查，根据各大学的研究、教职员人数、国际知名度、教学质量等进行评等与分析。
据“中央社”报道，该调查对全球前二十名最佳大学的排名分别是：哈佛大学、耶鲁大学、剑桥大学、牛津大学、加州理工学院、伦敦帝国学院、伦敦大学、芝加哥大学、麻省理工学院、哥伦比亚大学、宾州大学、普林斯顿大学、杜克大学与约翰霍普金斯大学并列第十三，康乃尔大学、澳洲国立大学、史丹佛大学、密西根大学、东京大学、马吉尔大学。
去年与耶鲁大学并居第二的剑桥大学与牛津大学，今年分别跌到第三和第四；普林斯顿大学由去年的第六名跌到今年的第十二名；康乃尔大学由去年的第二十名升到今年的第十五名；瑞士联邦理工学院苏黎世分校由去年的第四十二名，跃升到今年的第二十四名，进步惊人。
上榜的亚洲大学中，以日本的东京大学排名第十九，成绩最佳，京都大学排名第二十五，香港大学由去年的第十八名，跌到第二十六名，新加坡国立大学由去年的第三十三，进步到今年的第三十；首次进前五十大排行榜的香港科技大学从去年的第五十三大幅进步到第三十九。
中国北京大学由去年的第三十六名，大幅滑落到第五十名，与国立首尔大学同列第五十名。
在前五十大世界最佳大学中，共有十三个国家的大学登上排行榜，数目高于去年的十二个国家，新入榜的大学包括：香港科技大学、哥本哈根大学、都柏林三一学院、瑞士洛桑联邦理工学院、国立首尔大学。

1、Quacquarelli Symonds（简称QS，中文名夸夸雷利·西蒙兹公司）成立于1990年，公司创始人兼总裁是Nunzio Quacquarelli，总部位于英国伦敦，发表过众多关于世界大学排名的资讯。
