美國加州的大學CalTech加州理工學院(California Institute of Technology， 縮寫為Caltech)是一個小而精的學校，學生數少於兩千，理科和工科都很好。按比例計算，CalTech的諾貝爾獎獲得者世界最多。CalTech同時還管理著同在Pasadena市的噴氣推進實驗室(JPL)。世界著名的JPL其實比CalTech還大，有五、六千研究人員，由CalTech的教授們創建，最初為軍方研究火箭技術，現屬於美國宇航局(NASA)。
USC美國南加州大學(University of Southern California ) 位於洛杉磯市中心地區，該地區治安不太好(USC是我見過的唯一有圍牆的美國大學)。因為靠近好萊塢，USC的媒體專業非常好，工學院也不錯。 USC中的富家子弟很多，所以有人稱之為USC(University of Spoiled Children)。USC的死敵，同城的UCLA的學生們也把USC稱為University of Second Choice，其實兩校的綜合實力相當，體育都很強(USC是橄欖球的老大，UCLA是籃球的老大)。
美國加州的公立大學包括社區學院，加州州立大學系統(Cal State System)和加州大學系統(UC System)。州大系統屬於教學型大學，可以授予學士和碩士學位，有二十多所校區遍布加州各地(一所例外，聖迭戈州大(SDSU)屬於研究型大學)。加大系統屬於研究型大學，可以授予博士學位，有十所校區，北加州五所，南加州五所。一般認為，加大系統的學校分三個檔次，第一檔包括UC Berkeley，UCLA和UC San Diego；第二檔包括UC Davis，UC Irvine和UC Santa Babara，這六所都可以排在全美前五十名；第三檔包括UC Riverside，UC Santa Cruz和UC Merced。其中Merced校區剛開張兩三年，還有一個UC San Francisco只有醫學院，聲譽很好，排名可居全美前十。
亞裔家庭一般重視教育，小孩們也比較好學，所以加大系統中亞裔學生的比例很高，一般可以達到30%-40%(加州的亞裔人口低於總人口的10%)。亞裔比例最高的是爾灣加大(UC Irvine)，將近60%，所以UCI又有一個外號叫」中國移民大學」(UCI，University of Chinese Immigrants)。UCLA中亞裔也近半數，被稱為「University of Chinese and Lots of Asians」。不光是加大系統，在美國各大名校中的亞裔學生都偏高，所以美國高等教育照顧少數民族的政策中從不包括亞裔，只照顧西裔和非裔學生。
美國加州的大學生中間流傳著有一種說法，如果你又聰明家裡又有錢，那你應該上斯坦福或CalTech；如果你只聰明但沒錢，就去Berkeley或UCLA；如果你不太聰明但有錢，你就去USC；不太聰明也沒錢，你去其他加大各校；如果你又不聰明又沒錢，那你只好去州大或社區學院好了。
