Cornell—Pose a question that you wish that we had asked you and answer it. Heather posed the question: Tell about an activity that is particularly meaningful to you.

Yale—Please write an essay about an activity or interest that has been particularly meaningful to you.

Early on a June afternoon, I stood in the arena at Willows Farm. I was about to take my very first horse-riding lesson. I was excited, yet incredibly fearful at the same time. I&apos&aposd never actually ridden a horse by myself. Being led around on one of ponies at the fair didn&apos&apost count. I tried talking to myself. "What did/have to fear? After all, it certainly looked easy." I waited white one of the older girls finished in the arena. I&apos&aposd never seen such a big horse, and each time as they went around, the horse looked bigger and bigger.

When my lesson was finally ready to start, Aggie, my teacher, brought out a small pony named Kissy. She was so cute and little, I breathed a sigh of reli. I was convinced that I could handle the situation. "No problem," I thought, "I&apos&aposll be off to the races in no time."

That lesson began with the basics. First I had to learn to put on the bridle and saddle. Then I had to learn to get on and off. That proved to be a challenge, but by the time the lesson finished, I was allowed to "ride" Kissy by walking around in a circle a few times. Sitting there looking down, I knew I was As John Irving once said, "There is something in bestriding a fine horse that makes a man (or woman) feel more than mortal".

Little did my parents know that one lesson would turn into an obsession. I spent all day out at the bam. I&apos&aposd probably have stayed the night if my parents had allowed it. I did everything that I could do to learn - I cleaned stalls, walked horses, brushed horses, and fed some twice just to spend a few extra minutes out there. Over the next two years I attended local horse camps and watched others to see if they knew something that I could apply to my riding.

Eventually,I outgrew Kissy and my first trainer. The next step was to move up with the more advanced riders and to Sherry, the next trainer at the barn. Most of the more advanced

:rs owned their own horses. Switching trainers was the easy part. Convincing my parents buy me a horse proved to be slightly more difficult.

Aggie talked to them and told them how much I wanted a horse. Sherry talked to them, and told them how much I needed a horse. Nothing seemed to work. Over the dinner table, the conversation kept coming back to how much money was involved in buying and keeping a horse, but I didn&apos&apost give up. I kept asking. "A horse" was first on my Christmas list, first on my birthday list, and everything in between.

In the spring, a cute little quarter horse named Cat came into the barn. He was there to be sold, hopully to someone in the barn. He was a good mover and seemed to have a sweet personality. The first time I saw him. I bonded. I had to have this horse. There was just one small problem, my parents were still saying no. Aggie seemed to want me to have a horse as much as I wanted it. She even offered to cut my parents a deal on the board. Every time my mother came to pick me up. I was brushing, walking, or doing something for Cal. I&apos&aposd ask her to hold and talk to him for a few minutes while I got "something ready" bore I put him away. I could feel my mother melting. Finally one evening I heard the wonderful words. My parents agreed to purchase Cal. I had my very own horse. I was thrilled, and went to work with a brush and comb to make him look as good as he made me feel.

As much as I thought differently, I wasn&apos&apost quite prepared for the enormous responsibility of actually owning a horse. There was feeding, grooming, daily exercise, and stall cleaning to worry about. Becoming a good hunter-jumper meant spending long hours out at the barn. Getting good grades in school meant putting in long hours for homework. I had to learn to balance both. To get it all done, it was mandatory that I become organized and learn to focus on what I was doing in order to make the most of my time spent.

Riding has also presented a means of learning other valuable lessons. Foremost has been accepting responsibility. Owning Cal has meant that I&apos&aposve had the care of a living, breathing animal that depended on me. I couldn&apos&apost take a day off, even if I felt that I had something better to do. Dedication to the sport of riding has also been a learned skill. After the hardest fall or a bad day when nothing seemed to go right, I sometimes wanted to quit right on the spot. That was when I had to get myself back on track and do it again until I got it right. Those same lessons have carried over to school. If I&apos&aposve gotten less than u perfect grade on something or have found something difficult to understand. I&apos&aposve learned that I can&apos&apost just throw in the towel or blame it on the teacher. My ecation has become my responsibility, and I have had to go back and try twice as hard to prove to myself that I can do if.

In my ten years of riding and competing, I have never grown tired of it. I still have my little horse. We have competed and won at many horse shows, and we&apos&aposve grown to love and trust each other. My trainer often rerred to him as my best friend, and I&apos&aposve come to think of him that way too. Sometimes it is fun to lie in bed at night and look at the ribbons hanging on my wall. I know that every day that passes now brings me closer to the "someday" when it will come to an end. When it does,I will have the memories of the great times I&apos&aposve had and the lessons that I&apos&aposve learned, but most of all. I will have the memory of a little horse with a big heart named Cal.

In my opinion, the Financial Engineering is a kind of creative technology to the Financial Instruments, Financial Means and system. It used to balance the benefits and venture as an interesting interdisciplinary subject. It covers many fields such as mathematics, computer science and finance, in which the mathematics and mathematical modeling are the two main aspects of the Financial Engineering. The Investment Portfolio Theory of Markowitz, the capital asset pricing model of the Sharp, Option Pricing Model of Black-Scholes and 「Binomial」 model of Cox can best reflect the critical position of the two subjects.

I am glad to choose mathematics and applied mathematics. Three years』 study had deepened my understanding of them, especially of mathematical modeling. (It still occurs to me when I went to attend the class of XX department given by Professor Jiang qiyuan in Tsinghua University for the first time. 「1 kilogram of flour added with 1 kilogram of stuffing can make 100 mplings, but what if the stuffing is more than 1 kilogram?」 He used a very simple, vivid and interesting example which aroused my interest and led me into the mathematical modeling world.

The first time I kissed the mathematical modeling was in the summer vacation of 2005, when I got a good opportunity to attend the mathematical modeling training organized by our school. Seasoned mathematics teachers told me what on earth the mathematical modeling is through some existing examples, in which the one about SARS impressed me most. In 2003, SARS broke out and shrouded rapidly to the whole world, which imperiled our economic development and people』s living. Therefore, study on its spreading regularity and building the mathematical modeling for predicting and controlling its extension had become the 「Archimedes Heels」 for all mathematicians… So, the Logistic regression has been carved in my memory. Two weeks』 training has presented me with a kind of passion and calm thinking much more than just those classical mathematical models. As the patron saint of our human-beings, the existence of Mathematics and mathematical modeling are maintaining our subsistence and development. Then, when SARS ran riot, when we are suffering from the pain of AIDS, what can I do as a mathematics and mathematical modeling lover who loves life so much?

Pocketed with this passion and thinking, I tasted to use mathematical modeling into practice and solve the practical problems by attending the National College Mathematical Modeling Contest with the other two schoolmates on behalf of our college. It required us to evaluate the water quality of Changjiang River according to the data, through which we had to analyze the water pollution in every region and predict the trend of it in the future. Finally we had to bring out the plan against it. It was really a challenge for us towards flood of data and estimations as long as 17 pages. We tried almost a whole day only to filter those data and take the evaluations into comprehensive account. Pulling down various models we had built before, we were so defeated that we wanted to give up many times. However, we finally found the satisfactory model thanks to our encouragement to each other which armed us with full strength to go further. We managed to evaluate the water quality by Composite index model, which could not only represent the evaluation factors, but also reflect the main impacts of the contaminations to the water pollution. We predicted the future water pollution through multiple linear regressions fitting and brought out the plan against it by building linear optimization model. Finally, we got the second prize in Beijing for our thesis. Three days』 and nights』 modeling experience had cooled our passion and gave us even more calm thinking instead. The creation of the mathematical modeling, along with the successful solution to the problems through it lied on the solid mathematics foundation, strong modeling ability, accumulation of the knowledge on different fields, unique creative ideas and creativity.

The experience from this contest further aroused my interest in mathematics. I began to pay more attention to its application as well as learning the theories. In addition, I tried to catch every opportunity to take part in the practical mathematical modeling. My efforts finally rewarded when I was in the first term as a junior. I had a chance to participate in the 3-day electrician mathematical modeling practice-----classifying the sports programs for a big sports meeting. Being familiar with the Graph Theory, I immediately found the way to solve the problems by seeking the best Hamilton circuit line. Facing the nearly 8.7 billion data files with different orders much more than that on the National Mathematical Modeling Contest, I spent a long time on Algorithm without any perfect result. I wasn』t defeated towards this case, but so excited instead that I could have such a chance to challenge and improve myself. Looking up dozens of files, I finally made a perfect end of the practice by using the Genetic Algorithm into full account. It needs both a successful model and an effective arithmetic to solve these problems. , which largely shortened the operation time and improved the operation result. I learnt a lot from this practice. I came to know that to build successful mathematics modeling that can effectively solve the practical problems, we must take the operation cost

Summarizing my failures in the mathematical modeling electrician practice and proceeding from my interest in this field, I began to think of collaborating on the 「Mathematical Modeling Saloon」 with several students from mathematics and computer departments, taking the Computer Algorithms and mathematical modeling as the two themes of the book. Every Tuesday afternoon, we would organized those students interested in this field to study and exchange the ideas and arithmetic by imparting experience, sharing what we learnt, pondering together and discussing with each other. Both the traditional transportation & storage problems and the modern Stimulated Annealing Arithmetic (SAA), Ant Algorithm have ever been the topic of our discussion, from which I have learnt many thinking styles and methods to the problems from the students both in mathematics and computer department. So far, I am excited to see that this activity is still in the wind with more and more participants and it aroused a learning upsurge in our college.

Recommended by my teacher, I have participated in the Teaching Reform Program of Mrs. Xing yongli----the results analysis of 「Improving the mathematics teaching quality on class」. Mrs. Xing, along with some other mathematics teachers experienced the class mutual activities in 2004 to 2005 with the character data files in form of paper investigations. For this style of data files, I finally used the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a creative challenge instead of the fuzzy mathematical quantitative analysis models, which firstly knocked my mind. By quantitating data and using the AHP, I succeeded in analyzing how the overall quality of the teachers and their teaching skills work in improving the mathematics teaching quality on class, from which we got the conclusion that the teaching skills and the way to put forward questions on class play the most important role in the class mutual activities. Besides, Mrs. Xing collaborated with me on the thesis named 「The Application of Analytic Hierarchy Processinto the Evaluation of Class Mutual Activities」. Both of us were satisfied with this thesis and contributed it to many presses to be published.

Similar with the mathematical modeling, the soul of the Financial Engineering is also the creativity. Therefore, the perfect application of the mathematics and mathematical modeling into the Financial Engineering once more surged my enthusiasm in this field. Furthermore, the Financial Engineering plays the important part in people』s living, social stability and the national development, which is my original intention to choose this field I think.

2.對主題的要求:failure, achievement, activity, experience, culture, life, event, story, background, disappointment, challenge, value, change, influence, pursuit, passion, proud development, contribution

(Resume)

申請藝術類學生需提交作品集;

如實習與所申請專業相關,需提交實習證明;

全面了解美國大學的錄取人數和獎學金發放比例;

在文書寫作中有效地挖掘升華自己的優勢,在現有基礎上加強競爭力;

Activities List

Make it easy to understand your activities Most colleges' applications will provide you with a space to describe your activities and estimate the amount of time you spend doing each. Here』s how to do that effectively. 1. Never submit a resume in place of actually listing your activities. If you send a resume without being asked, it』s like telling the college that you didn』t like the way they put the application together. Don』t do it. It』ll just annoy them. 2. List your activities in order of importance to you.Start with the one activity that you could never imagine your high school career without, then work your way down from there. That will help an admissions officer quickly understand what was most important to you, and likely what you spent the most time doing. 3. List only what』s significant. The applicant with the longest list of activities is not necessarily the one who』清銀迅s going to get in. Admissions officers want to learn about the significant ways you spent your time outside of class. If you were in the Spanish Club in ninth grade and never went back after ninth grade, it won』t really help your application to list it. Leave the space blank, or use the spot to share something else more important to you. Remember: this isn』t a contest to see how much you can list. It』s your chance to describe what you really enjoyed doing in high school. 4. Spell out (most) abbreviations/acronyms.It would be hard to find someone who doesn』t know what an MVP is, but there are lots of other abbreviations that only mean something to the people involved in the group that uses it. Would your aunt who doesn』t work at your high school know it? If not, write it out on your application. 5. Be accurate with your 「approximate time spent.」Many colleges will ask you to estimate the number of weeks per year, and number of hours per week, that you spend participating in each activity. Be as accurate as you can. Colleges aren』t paying close enough attention that they』ll question if two hours a week in the Spanish Club should more accurately be one hour. But if you tell them your involvement in the Spanish Club is 30 hours per week, that doesn』t add up (unless Spanish Club has become your full-time job). Don』t underestimate, either. If you say you play football six hours a week, that』s probably selling yourself short considering that one game alone is at least three hours. Again, just be as accurate as you can. Also, some students who are very involved in an activity automatically enter 「52 weeks per year.」 But you should only do that if you are honestly swimming in the pool or working at the hamburger stand or running the Key Club every single week of the year (including winter holiday, spring break and summer months). There』s no need to exaggerate here, and no reason to give an admissions officer pause.

University of Chicago芝加哥大學Essay範文 "Beyond Dictionary Definitions of leadership"

作者 Victoria Tomaka

"All I know about leadership I learned from . . ." What items could a person use to describe leadership qualities?

盯改Inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.

Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I have participated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined, I was quiet, na?ve, and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared to meet new people and afraid to apply myself. This all began to change. Half way through my frst year in student council, one of the advisors can up to me and asked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. After this, I began to think of an answer. I became frustrated and decided to change. I started to show up at events and had a great time. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. In my sophomore, junior, and now my senior year of high school, I asserted myself and took on a strong leadership role in student council. I did not fgure out the answer to why I was so reserved until this year with the help of this question.

When I looked up leadership in the dictionary, it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two very broad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what this word actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is, I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers, I realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.

All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type of problem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. Leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. They have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.

All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are also leadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closed-minded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be able to "catch the ball" and keep a project rolling.

This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and, leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should not delegate all their responsibilities away.

Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.

I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.

I have the ability to solve problems, lead through adversity, and be versatile. From answering this question, I realized that I could lead effectively, even if my leadership style is different from other indivials. When I joined student council in my frst year of high school, I did not have these qualities because I was never put into a situation where I had to lead. I was too reserved to try. When I tried, I learned that I could succeed in this. I did not realize until I answered this question about leadership. I was never able to see that being a leader is not just about taking control of a group and telling everyone what to do.www.liuxue.la When I was a freshman, I thought leadership was this. I did not know that did not have to be forceful and strict. I stereotyped a leader then. Thisis where I went wrong. A leader is about being yourself and never letting anyone change you. I thought I had to change to be a good leaderOnly when I expanded my comfort zone did I realize this was not trueIt only took three years and a silly question/game to fgure this out.

4. passionate, sincere, persistent(這個比較重要,因為美國的graate school都希望你呆在他們學校做一輩子學問...)
5. 語言...

"Approximate dates"
"Number of hours spent per week (if applicable)"
