Why: 美國學校很注重多樣性(diversity)，所以學校在挑選學生的時候都比較prefer一些有著獨特文化背景，教育背景或個人成長背景的學生。例如你來自一些少數民族或者來自一些民族特徵比較明顯的地區如西北地區等，往往不同地區的人們性格會有或多或少的不一樣的，這就要看你自己對於自己的民族或所在地區的深刻理解了。但你不妨問一下自己以下的問題：

1、你覺得你所生長的地區賦予了你哪些獨特性?

2、這個地區的人民有哪些顯著的特點?

3、為什麼你會覺得你生長在這個地區是特別的?

4、你覺得這個地區對於你成長有哪些幫助?

5、你會為自己出生在這個地區而感到自豪嗎?為什麼?

(二)身邊人對你的影響：爸爸?媽媽?老師?或是電影、書上的人物?

Why:除了學術方面，學校都想了解申請人的人生觀和價值觀，通過學生所崇拜的對象學校可以看出學生對於是與非的分辨。美國留學申請文書這里主要考核的是學生的價值觀還有通過對你影響最深的人推斷出你以後的成長軌跡。

(三)才藝

Why: 通常美國留學申請文書的Essay題目裡面都會有一條是關於課外活動的，主要考核的是學生的各種能力、性格特點等方面。例如你喜歡彈鋼琴，不妨問一下自己以下的問題：

1、為什麼會學鋼琴?

2、你是如何進行你的鋼琴練習的?

3、鋼琴演奏對於你來說意味著些什麼?

4、描述一下你演奏最出色的一次當時的情形?

5、演奏練習辛苦嗎?期間是否有一些不尋常的事情發生過?例如挑戰?挫折?自己的心得體會又是什麼?

6、當你苦練了那麼久，最後在過級考委面前真正地彈奏你所熟悉的曲子你的感受是什麼?

7、鋼琴演奏帶給你的樂趣是什麼?

(四)志願者經歷

Why: 美國學校看重的並不是你的成績有多麼多麼的優秀，你曾經拿過多少獎項，而更多的是看重學生的志願者經歷，而這些恰恰是中國學生所缺失的。不妨問一下自己：

1、曾經做過的志願者活動是什麼?當時的情形是怎樣的?

2、描述一個情景，而這個情景是真正能夠觸動你有想當志願者的沖動的?

3、志願者活動對於你來說意味著什麼?

(五)學科的選擇

Why: 通常申請文書會問你為什麼要選擇它們的商學院或者為什麼要選擇金融or經濟學，這里主要考核的是學生的academic potential以及make sure學生做出這樣的選擇並非是盲目的。那你就不妨問一下自己：

1、為什麼這個專業?是什麼使你有這個想法的?別人的影響?還是你個人的興趣?

2、選擇這個專業對於你來說意味著什麼?

3、你未來的職業目標是什麼?

4、你對這個專業認識有多少?

(六)學校的選擇(why our university)

Why：這個是一個常見的問題，就算學校沒有要求申請人寫此類的essay,申請人也應該在PS的最後闡明自己選擇這所學校的理由。切忌大而空的回答，很多學生都喜歡說因為學校聲望高、名氣好、地理位置佳等作為自己選擇學校的理由，但這只會讓學校覺得你是在盲目地選校而不是根據自身的需求出發來選擇學校。所以不妨問一下自己：

1、你的職業目標是什麼?這個職業目標需要你掌握些什麼知識或技能?

2、這所學校的課程設置如何?能否滿足你的學習需求和未來職業目標需求?

3、這所學校吸引你的地方在哪裡?

總之，美國留學申請文書寫作的總原則就是一定要圍繞著自己的特點來進行寫作和規劃，最好出自己在性格方面的優勢和特點，同時挖掘素材，不能寫成千篇一律的毫無特色的流水賬式的申請文書。如果沒有認真挖掘出你自身的素材，或者未能徹底對你進行審視，都會導致缺乏個性的大眾化。

第一步：列提綱

動筆之前，要給PS列一個大的框架。明確具體要寫什麼，如何組織素材，如何凸現閃光點。所以，一開始組織整理素材的時候，可以養成隨時做筆記的習慣，把突現的靈感，自己的閃光點隨時記錄下來，最後列成大綱，整理出寫作思路，最終形成一個完整的寫作提綱。提醒大家需要注意的是，在這個過程中，要注意挖掘自己的閃光點，發現自己的獨特之處，由此定下寫作主題。

第二步：開頭

一定要寫一個「龍頭」。我們平時閱讀文章的時候會注意到，如果一篇文章的開頭寫的很好的話，我們會很有興趣往下讀，但如果對文章的開頭就不感興趣的話，根本不可能再接著讀。一個好的的開頭肯定非常吸引人，讓人有讀下去的慾望。而不是模仿別人的寫法，給人毫無新意的感覺，這樣不管你後面的內容有多精彩，讀者都不會有心情看下去了。因此，開頭要與眾不同，要精煉，不用太長，要推出主題句，即全文的中心。然後在下文中環環相扣，層層推開，有跌宕起伏，有起承轉合。

第三步：主題

文書的主體部分應該是鏗鏘有力的「金剛身」，有邏輯，有說服力，詳略得當，重點突出。當你的文書開了一個好頭，吸引人看下去的時候，就是主體部分起作用的時候，讀者要通過文書的主體部分來進一步了解你是什麼樣的人，你具備哪些品質和能力等。主體部分通常包括個人經歷、教育背景、工作經歷、科研經歷等，具體寫什麼內容，突出哪些部分要依個人情況來定。在寫這些經歷是，不要平鋪直敘，僅僅羅列出你有過什麼經歷，你的角色和你具體做了什麼，更重要的是要展現出你從這些事件或經歷中學到了什麼，這些經歷對你的申請起到什麼作用，如何去看待和評價這種經歷。

在主體部分，一定要突出自己是個什麼樣的人，一定要能展現出你的特點、長處、未來的目標、以及它們之間的相關性。但不要一味的誇自己，或寫出很狂妄的句子。

第四步：結尾

需要有一個「鳳尾」。龍頭鳳尾，首尾呼應，才算是一篇優秀的文書。文書的結尾應該是一個起到一個總結陳詞的作用，呼應全文主題，讓文章的主題更加鮮明。提醒大家要注意，文書的結尾要避免簡單復述文章內容，應簡潔明了，不要過分啰嗦，要有說服力，起到畫龍點睛的作用。
