assistant prof的薪水足夠一家3口了，4口也行不過小孩上私立學校就有點吃緊。大學教授的薪水算中上，家庭平均收入是53k，所以一家一個人工作就超過家庭平均水平，生活上面一點壓力都沒有。

The Benjamin Peirce Fellowship position carries the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointments are for three years with a starting salary of approximately 60'600 for the 9 Month academic year. This salary usually can be augmented by teaching at the Summer School or by working on a research contract if funds are available. The teaching commitment is three half courses per year, including a one-term course on a subject of the lecturer's choice, if desired. The Benjamin Peirce Fellows are expected to take part in the usual tasks of advising students.

總之，助理教授可以說是「准副教授」了吧。比如郎咸平在沃頓和芝加哥都是助理教授，但是也可以說是有一定的學術水平和地位了。當然和正式的教授還是有差距的。但是，不少人認為他是助教，總是奚落他，這就不對了。
