事实上，传统上被称为“常春藤联盟”(Ivy League)的八所私立大学都在前15名之列。常春藤盟校可谓称霸榜单，除了哈佛和耶鲁之外，布朗大学(Brown University)并列第五，普林斯顿大学(Princeton University)并列第七，康奈尔大学(Cornell University)位列第九，达特茅斯学院(Dartmouth College)排名第12，宾夕法尼亚大学(University of Pennsylvania)排名第13，以及哥伦比亚大学(Columbia University)并列第15。

前10名中超过一半的学校都在东北地区，例外的是位列第四的斯坦福大学(Stanford University)、并列第五的杜克大学(Duke University)、并列第七的加利福尼亚理工学院(California Institute of Technology)和位列第10的西北大学(Northwestern University)。排名首位的公立院校密歇根大学安娜堡校区(University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus)排在总榜的第23位。

高等教育专家指出，常春藤盟校的持续成功与其雄厚的经济实力有很大关系。“围绕学术资源、研究生债务、教职员工多样性以及毕业生薪水所使用的指标，肯定有利于那些坐拥大量捐赠资金的学校。”美国高校协会(Association of American Colleges and Universities)主席林恩·帕斯奎拉(Lynn Pasquerella)表示。

这些都是《华尔街日报》/《泰晤士高等教育》排名中的关键指标，基于四大类中的15个因素：每所学校总分的40%来自培养成绩，包括毕业生的薪水和债务状况；30%来自资源，包括学校在教学上的花费；20%来自学生参与度，包括学生是否觉得已经准备好将所学应用到现实社会中去；10%来自学习环境，包括生源群体和学术人员的背景多样性。
当然，今年的排名是在新冠疫情全球大流行期间公布的，受疫情影响，学生在春季早早回到家中，而秋季的校园生活和教学内容也被彻底颠覆。“我认为今年是格外艰难的一年，很难用任何标准来衡量高等教育。”美国教育委员会(American Council on Ecation)主席泰德·米切尔(Ted Mitchell)说，“事情瞬息万变，两秒钟前发生了什么，两秒钟后又会发生什么，真的很难确定。”

《华尔街日报》/《泰晤士高等教育》排名依据的是线下高等教育几乎完全停摆之前所收集的数据，而远程教育质量或面授的健康安全实践等日益重要的因素则没有被包括进去。尽管如此，在疫情期间，学费成本和生源群体多样性等基本要素还是基本不变的。
