A Boy’s Firsts
The boy is such a common boy. He is so common that only acquaintedfriends can notice him among the crowd; he is so common that he does not changehis girlfriend one time per month, just as those playboys do; and he is socommon that his daily life is no more special than those who listen to rock n’roll, bet for soccer games and seldom clean their rooms.
However, the boy is somewhat special.
闹带He usually thinks that, his experience and personal achievements, along with his own happiness and grievances, are enough for him to be unique, though he does not have a face as good-looking as Brad Pitt or Keanu Reeves, orwhoever.
First Award
It was such a surprising gift for a 12-year-old boy to know that hehad won the first prize in the national mathematics competition. The boyclutched the certification and laughed like a sun-flower blooming in a springmorning. He had spent three months preparing for that competition and hadlost5kgweight but he was very happy, as happy as you could imagine. Enjoyingthe pace of enterprising, he began to believe “No pain no gain” that afternoon.
First Setback
Huddling up in the quilt crying, the boy was introspecting himself. For his haughtiness after achieving the second prize in the National PhysicsCompetition, he deserved the rank of last 5% in the final examination of7thgrade. Wiping up the tears, he set himself a promise of being humble andsober. The boy kept the promise and became a young man of great maturity.
First cooking
“Quite a tough work.” The boy said to himself, smearing soap on a blister caused by theburning oil. But a small blister never could stop him from doing his “cookingresearch”. The boy stood in front of the gas-stove again, holding apancaketurner in his left hand, he was trying to find out the correct time of addingsalt and the appropriate amount of other flavorings. After so many failures, hefelt that it was not a simple task of cooking out palatable meals, nut achallenge of surpassing himself. When the boy finally finished working one anda half hours later, he put a sweet smile on his dirty face. The boy wrote inhis diary, “keep working and you’ll win.”
First Love
At the age of 16, the boy fell in love with a smart girl. Eatingice-cream with the girl in the ice-cream bar at the street, walking on theboulevard hand in hand, cycling her home and kissing goodbye, he regarded loveas the holy thing in his life. Thus, the boy demonstrates a love from heart; hecares everyone nearby and wants them to be beatific with their families. Aspeople say, an angelic soul.
First Job
The extremely hot summer holiday of 16, the boy was excited when hegot a job at the local train station as a ticket-taker. First working day, theboy got up so early that when he arrived at the station, the previousticket-taker was still on his work, in astonishment of the boy’s appearance. But the ticket-taker did not know that, the boy was just so eager as to get onthe job to show that he had grown up.
Soon a common college student will he be. A common one that will beassious in class and passionate in the basketball court; that will make everyeffort to run for the Chairman of the Student Union but may still face failure;that is no more special than those who spend half a day in libraries and forgetto go to dinner when do researches in labs. But somehow he will be a uniquecollege student, because he will have his own way of fulfilling his dreams.
And as you may know, the boy is me.

(Resume)
申请艺术类学生需提交作品集;
如实习与所申请专业相关,需提交实习证明;
全面了解美国大学的录取人数和奖学金发放比例;
在文书写作中有效地挖掘升华自己的优势,在现有基础上加强竞争力;
At my age, few people can genuinely claim that they have had a life-changing experience. After attending Leadership in the Business World (LBW) at the Wharton School last summer, I became one of those fortunate people to have experienced a life-changing academic program. Four weeks of meeting business executives, working with teammates through the night perfecting our professional business plan, experiencing the independence and responsibility that will come with college . . . none of this was advertised in the brochure for LBW, but all of this is what made it uniquely meaningful to me.
I TROD THE MUD IN THE misty spring rain. It was Qing Ming, the holiday in China when we honored our deceased ancestors. On the ground of the cemetery, drenched fowers lay in my grandfather's remembrance. That morning—a month before my sixth birthday—I clung tightly to my mother's sleeves and fnally learned why he passed away.
HE'S IN MY ARMS, THE NEWEST addition to the family. I'm too overwhelmed. "That's why I wanted you to go to Bishop Loughlin," she says, preparing baby bottles. "But ma, I chose Tech because I wanted to be challenged." "Well,顷宴 you're going to have to deal with it," she replies, adding, "Your aunt watched you when she was in high school." "But ma, there are three of them. It's hard!"
Every first Thursday of each month I always look around the Van Muren Hall gymnasium looking at the sixty- and seventy-year-old men and wonder what I am doing there with them. They have lived through world-shaping events like World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, yet I sit there and interact with them as if there were no differences at all. The reason? We simply share a similar hobby.
Only shock prevented the tears from streaming down my face. My cells were dead. After being accepted into the competitive Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer research Program (SIMr), and spending approximately 170 hours of the past month manipulating human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), I was back to square one—with only one month of my internship remaining. How in the world was I going to make up for lost time?
The hin god, brahma, seeing the plight of a society tainted by envy and greed, presents a boy with a drum that he can only hear, not see. This instrument, which is supposed to bring patience and discipline to humanity, is the foundation of Indian classical music. The boy has yet to discover that musicians use this tool to speak, allowing their minds to transmit messages through the vibrant pulsations of their notes.
University of Chicago芝加哥大学Essay范文 "Beyond Dictionary Definitions of leadership"
作者 Victoria Tomaka
"All I know about leadership I learned from . . ." What items could a person use to describe leadership qualities?
盯改Inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.
Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I have participated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined, I was quiet, na?ve, and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared to meet new people and afraid to apply myself. This all began to change. Half way through my frst year in student council, one of the advisors can up to me and asked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. After this, I began to think of an answer. I became frustrated and decided to change. I started to show up at events and had a great time. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. In my sophomore, junior, and now my senior year of high school, I asserted myself and took on a strong leadership role in student council. I did not fgure out the answer to why I was so reserved until this year with the help of this question.
When I looked up leadership in the dictionary, it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two very broad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what this word actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is, I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers, I realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.
All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type of problem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. Leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. They have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.
All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are also leadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closed-minded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be able to "catch the ball" and keep a project rolling.
This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and, leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should not delegate all their responsibilities away.
Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.
I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.
I have the ability to solve problems, lead through adversity, and be versatile. From answering this question, I realized that I could lead effectively, even if my leadership style is different from other indivials. When I joined student council in my frst year of high school, I did not have these qualities because I was never put into a situation where I had to lead. I was too reserved to try. When I tried, I learned that I could succeed in this. I did not realize until I answered this question about leadership. I was never able to see that being a leader is not just about taking control of a group and telling everyone what to do.www.liuxue.la When I was a freshman, I thought leadership was this. I did not know that did not have to be forceful and strict. I stereotyped a leader then. Thisis where I went wrong. A leader is about being yourself and never letting anyone change you. I thought I had to change to be a good leaderOnly when I expanded my comfort zone did I realize this was not trueIt only took three years and a silly question/game to fgure this out.

A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the ecational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.
There simply was no solution. With tears of frustration in my eyes I went through the options for the hundredth time. I had come face to face with one of life’s many brutal truths: no one can build a sand-castle by herself. About to give up in despair, I spied something that made my heart leap. There, between the little red slide and the big-kid swings, sat another five-year old girl. It did not matter that as a native of the country I was visiting, she only spoke German.
All too soon we were casting long shadows in the fading sunlight, and I had to say goodbye to my architectural partner. I knew nothing but her name, which I have long since forgotten. After all, this was simply one of many such encounters.
By the time I realized how lucky I was to do so, I had traveled to most of Europe and some of Asia. My father’s job dragged our family from country to country. We lived for a few months in Israel one year, a few months in Switzerland the next. If I were to go back to any one of the many countries to which I have traveled, I would naturally be drawn to the famous monuments, historic landmarks, and local museums. But the memories of my international playmates are some of the most valuable souvenirs I could bring home from my travels. With their help, I learned to both respect and appreciate others’ differences.
At times this respect came with difficulty, particularly when the culture in question clashed with my own. When I was twelve my father was invited to teach a class in South Korea, and so off we went. One day we visited a small art museum, where we met the only curator, a small, hospitable woman who spoke no English. I responded politely when she welcomed us to the museum, and then not quite so politely when she started running her hands through my long, curly hair. I stood rooted to the spot by shock and horror as she neatly braided my hair. After a few minutes I was released, and with a great sigh of relief I set off to explore. I had hardly reached the door when, to my dismay, the hair-braider returned – brandishing a comb. Gathering my dignity, I suffered her ministrations. The result was a breathtaking French braid, shaming me for resenting the curator’s lack of respect for my personal space. Never again did I hold other cultures to my own standards.
In Belize, I saw that other cultures have different economic as well as personal standards. My family and I stayed in the small village of Armenia, a town built for refugees from the surrounding countries of Guatemala, Honras, and El Salvador. Most residents made their living as hired hands at the local grapefruit orchards or selling handmade souvenirs to the tourists. The wealthier townspeople owned horses for transportation or pack animals, but most simply walked.
At first I pitied the locals for their poverty. As I spent more time with them, I began to see that they did not consider themselves poor, nor lament their lack of luxury. The concept of wealth meant something completely different in Armenia, something that had less to do with possessions and more to do with family. While I appreciate the comfort in which I live, the Armenians make me thankful for the little things in life, the beautiful days and loyal friends that no amount of money could replace.
To this day I value diversity. Many of my friends speak imperfect English; for most it is their second language. Few are citizens of the United States. As I make the transition from high school to college, I hope to meet students from a variety of different cultures and backgrounds with whom I can share my unique experiences. Though I have traveled in four continents and met people of numerous cultures, I have not yet been to college, and sometimes the thought makes me apprehensive. That said, I know that if I approach my college years with the same open-minded curiosity I learned from my family’s wanderings, I will be amazed.
8:The Power of Diversity
A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the ecational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.
The doorbell rang incessantly. The rest of the NASA Sharpies (as we like to call ourselves) and I in the room looked at each other in confusion - the door was already wide open. Glancing over, we saw Kennedy walk in with a curious look on his face. "Why does it make that sound when I press that?" he asked us. We all responded by letting out a heartfelt chuckle. I explained to him that pressing that little button is usually used to signal to the residents living inside that there is a visitor waiting to be greeted. "Ah, that's tight!" he replied while smiling. He had never seen such a device in his hometown of Tafuna, American Samoa. Although it may have seemed to be just a trivial difference in the two cultures, it was one of many moments at NASA SHARP that allowed me to experience firsthand the richness of diversity.
Twenty of us flew into LAX, everyone from a different part of the United States or one of its outlying territories. The first night, we played a game where each of us was asked questions ranging from favorite sports teams to professional goals. I participated intently in the game, asking as many questions as I could to learn more about everyone. It became quite clear that although there were differences in our backgrounds and ethnicities, we had many interests in common. I began to realize that the disparities between us were not barriers but catalysts for meaningful interaction.
I learned something different from each sharpie. Fozoh taught me how to solve a Rubik's cube. Tiffany lent me some CDs that they listened to down in Mobile (properly pronounced "Mobeeeele"), Alabama. Andrea described life on a Navajo reservation and debunked many myths that I had. Kennedy told stories of how he could string thirty coconuts together back in Samoa. Jasmine even allowed me to try one of her special Puerto Rican fruits. I, personally, cooked authentic Chinese fried rice for the others and explained many times that we say "pop" instead of "soda" in the Midwest.
Together, we would often stay up at late at night. Over chips and salsa, we discussed issues that we felt were pertinent. My views often clashed with others' as we debated topics ranging from politics to movies. It was lighthearted and fun at the time, but now I look back with a sense of nostalgia. The environment that existed at NASA SHARP broadened my point of view and made me reevaluate my stance on certain issues. The beauty of our differences is that it allows us to have such different perspectives and intellectually stimulate others.
Over the eight weeks, I developed a deep respect for the eclectic community that surrounded me. Coming from a homogenous suburb in the Midwest, I was in awe as we bonded. It is this desire to connect that I hope to bring to Yale - perhaps not by cooking fried rice for everyone, but by having an open mind and an avid determination to embrace the power of diversity.
My interest in mathematics stems from the first time my teacher taught me calculus in tenth grade. I was so intrigued to discover the area under the curve can be calculated so easily and even completed the problems not assigned by the teacher that night. From that day on, boring math homework for others started to be my first homework to complete even to this day. Today, I sit in the classroom of the most difficult mathematics course the school offers – multivariable calculus – solving interesting ellipsoid problems.
After finishing my tenth grade in China, I went back to America, the country I was born in and raised for seven years. The change was enormous, both culturally and academically. For the first month, I had a hard time adjusting to the different situation. Fortunately, I survived after two months; and within several months later, I found myself excelling once again academically. I even had more class participation in Shakespeare Literature classes! Nonetheless, my passion for math remained consistent across the continental shift. When it was homework time, my math notebook was always on the top of the pile.
In high school, I benefited from the great opportunities my school offered and had much free time to pursue my math interests. Every week in school, there are preparation sessions for the math competition “Great New Haven Math League,” which is a regional math competition held every two weeks throughout the entire school year. In February, I have the chance to represent my school, along with my math team members, to attend the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament. As one of the key members on the math team, I established practice groups ring free time so that team members can solve practice problems together and help each other. In June, I represented my school in attending the American Regions Math League, which is a competition held annually joined by high schools across America.
At Mellon College of Science, I would elect to study both the Mathematical Science degree and the Computational Finance Minor, as I desire to enter the financial world after college. Doing so would equip me with the advanced mathematical modeling aptitude to succeed in numerous roles on Wall Street, such as currency trading. I look forward to solving interesting problems with my classmates and enjoying the enthusiasm mathematics brings to us. Moreover, I look forward to partaking in various math contests including the Putnam Competition.
In closing, math is going to be one of my enring friends and accompany me throughout my entire life. Future studies in my life will determine my ultimate vocation, but math will be an essential factor despite the field in which I work. Mastering advanced mathematics concepts ring college will ensure me the fulfillment of my passion and broaden my perspectives in the ocean of knowledge that is mathematics.
